One evening only: the sky of a date that matters

This is the story you are preparing for someone else. The story takes the date and the place you gave and reconstructs the sky of that evening: the star connected to the dedication, the constellation that holds it and where it stood above that horizon. For the UK the place is the town, city or county, and dates are written day/month/year. The tone is private: it is meant for two people and needs nothing more. You can reread it and change every word before you hand it over.

    Where the stars come from

    Identifiers, coordinates and apparent magnitudes come from a public astronomical catalogue, imported in advance and kept locally: while you use the tool we query no external service.

    How a date becomes a sky

    Date, time and place become an instant in universal time; from there the classical geometry of the celestial sphere gives the altitudes and azimuths of that evening. The time zone comes from the chosen place, so the seasonal clock change applied is the one in force on your date, not today's.

    What is calculated and what stays photographic

    Date, time and place determine the transformation from the celestial DSS2 mosaic to the sky above an ideal horizon. The stellar pixels remain those of the survey; only reprojection and photographic grading are applied.

    What the calculation does not do

    It applies no atmospheric refraction, knows nothing of hills and buildings, and leaves out very long period corrections. That is why positions are indicative to within about half a degree.

    What happens without a time

    A missing time blocks nothing: the plate uses the default local time and prints it next to the date, so you always know which instant you are looking at.
